Canadian context
What's different about gambling debt in Canada
Bankruptcy and consumer proposal processes in Canada are federally governed but locally administered. A Licensed Insolvency Trustee (LIT) consultation is free and required to access formal debt relief. Find a trustee at the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.
A consumer proposal lets you repay a negotiated portion of your debt over up to 5 years, often 20–50 cents on the dollar. It's less damaging to credit than bankruptcy and has become the most common formal debt relief option in Canada.
Each province runs its own self-exclusion program: PlaySmart (ON), GameSense (BC), and provincial equivalents. Look up your province's gaming authority to register.
